We are certified organic by BioGro New Zealand, and process both conventional (non-organic) and certified organic products.

For over 30 years, Bio Oils has been extracting flaxseed oil using the cold pressing method. Over these years we have combined traditional methods and modern technology, with a few family secrets thrown in! The result is pure, unrefined, quality products, that we are proud to call our own. We cold press in small batches ‘to order’, from New Zealand grown seed that is traceable back to the farm. This might mean a slightly longer turnaround time for orders, but it also means that our customers receive freshly pressed oils of the very best quality, that are fully traceable every step of the way … from Soil to Oil®

Processing: Cold Pressed

Cold pressing is the best method of extracting nutritional oil from nuts and seeds that is as close to nature as possible. Extracting oil through cold pressing involves crushing the seed, forcing out the oil.

The seeds are dropped inside a cylinder that contains a rotating screw, and this screw grinds and crushes the seeds until the oil is extracted. Small holes in the bottom of the cylinder allow the oil to escape into a collection tank. Each of our detailed processes has been perfected to ensure the oil is kept at low temperatures during extraction, producing oils that retain their nutritional quality, natural flavour and aroma.

In contrast, solvent extraction and refining processes used by large-scale, commodity producers strip the oils of their natural anti-oxidants, vitamins and flavour. Using heat extracts more oil from the seed, but heat can degrade the oil’s flavour and nutritional quality.

For this reason, Bio Oils do not use any heat, chemicals or solvents, and only cold press all oils with passion, care and attention. Our cold-pressed oils are cholesterol free, are unrefined and unprocessed, do not contain harmful solvent residues, and contain natural antioxidants and nutrients that are beneficial for the body… as nature intended.


Our processing facilities and offices are located in Ashburton, Mid Canterbury, New Zealand. Our two-storey building consists of production areas and warehousing on the ground floor, with offices on the second floor. Silos for seed storage are also on site.

The processing room is the heart of our business, housing our cold pressing machines (expellers), collection vats and settling tanks. We are not commodity processors producing products for the mass market, instead we provide our customers with premium quality products that are processed in small batches specifically for them.

Our processing room has been constructed specifically for cold pressing sensitive edible oils. The room is enclosed to exclude harmful UV light, and the walls are made of concrete block to maintain stable cool temperatures. Immediately after cold pressing, our oils are blanketed with inert gas to prevent oxidation, and allowed to settle naturally in storage tanks. This natural settling stage is important, as it allows the very fine seed particles from the cold pressing process (sediment) to settle to the bottom. Once settled, this sediment can be removed naturally, and the clear oil filtered to remove any remaining fine particles. Pure, natural, beautiful liquid gold!

Certified Organic

Bio Oils operates parallel processing of both conventional (non-organic) and certified organic products, which is strictly controlled to ensure no cross-contamination. We are certified organic by BioGro, New Zealand’s largest certifier for organic products. All Primary Producers, Processors and Service Providers handling organic product in New Zealand must be certified by either BioGro or Asure Quality, therefore our customers can be assured they are buying a 100% certified organic product.

What is the difference between organic and certified organic?

As the word certified implies, a Certified Organic product comes from a supplier whose products have been pronounced upon by an independent third party that guarantees the integrity and purity of foods or ingredients.

Certified Organic products must comply with strict international standards. These higher standards cover all aspects of the processing chain, ensuring that the organic integrity is maintained from the seed or primary state, through the growing, harvesting, storage, transporting and processing stages, all the way to the finished product. A key feature of these standards is the exclusion of genetically modified organisms.

It is important to beware of imitations—products that say they are organic and sustainable can often be far from it! Look for the word certified and the certification logo on the packaging.
